Montreal + African beads …. two favourites of mine ! On Canada Day on a long leisurely stroll through town I combined these two favourites in a fun way….
The Secret Bench of Knowledge is a sculpture created by Canadian artist Lea Vivot and produced in multiple castings. The sculpture has many messages inscribed on it, written by school children, about the importance and pleasure of reading. Other locations for the sculpture include various cities in Ontario, (including Sarnia) as well as New York and ours here in Montreal.
In Funky Frog’s version the young lady is wearing three gorgeous ‘Ralph’ necklaces made with beautiful old African trade beads. The vibrant colours of the beads look wonderful against the greenish patina of the bronze scultpure. African beads + Montreal just go together!
Across the street from the young lovers are what Montrealers affectionately call ‘the Butter People’.
‘The Illuminated Crowd, a sculpture where 65 people of all ages, race, facial expressions and conditions are depicted on four platforms, illustrates the degradation of the human race and symbolizes the fragility of the human condition. Created by Franco-British artist, Raymond Mason, this unique public sculpture is made from stratified polyester resin with polyurethane paint and is located just outside the main gate of McGill University.’

Being a new grandmother, the Mom and child sculptures, touch my heart. Both of these sculptures depict the tenderness and love of a mother towards her child. What heroines are mothers! The African trade beads looked gorgeous against the white marble ….

‘The Joy of Life’ is a wonderful name for this mother and child sculpture, also by Lea Vivot. Funky Frog’s Silvia Fiesta necklace looks wonderful against the greenish patina of the sculpture.

Heffel Auction commissioned Joe Fafard to create a sculpture of Emily Carr. In 2005, a patina coloured bronze of Emily Carr (1871-1945) with her monkey Woo, her dog Billie and her horse was completed in an edition of seven. The three auction houses in Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal have an edition in front of their buildings for all to enjoy 24/7.
