The Africans also believe that the catfish can help us let go of our material possessions and live in balance with nature. The catfish is also a symbol of strength, determination, and perseverance.

  • A strand of 50 gorgeous warm orange Carnelian Agate Beads found in the Koforidua Market in Ghana. The beads are well matched with the average size being 22x11 mm. The beads are strung on plastic string 42" long. The colour varies from a dark burnt orange to a light orange ... very Autumn. You will receive a strand similar to the photo.     A gorgeous barrel shaped bead 21 x 28 mm with a carved design that is brushed with a brick colour...  Would make a beautiful pendant!  Please note that these beads were handmade so each bead varies. You will receive one that is similar to the ones in the photo. If you get six beads the sixth one is free ! (so in actual fact only order five and i will put in the free one :) My affection for these beads grew when I heard that these 'Spindles' actually evolved into the beads they are today because of our avid collectioner's heart (all Beaders have one of those!) Originally these Spindles were actually made to spin cotton but then people started collecting them because they were so beautiful. They became rare .. so some enterprising people started making new ones but more as the beads they are today... They are so beautiful and evoke the country, Africa just by handling them and by the fact they are made of Africa's earth.

This is considered the  'Chief of the adinkra symbols' as a symbol of greatness, charisma and leadership. It signifies the importance of playing a leadership role. And this pendant has 5 of these circles embossed on a circle...

"Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Ashanti of Ghana and the Gyaman of Cote d’Ivoire in West Africa. They represent concepts or aphorisms, and are extensively used in fabrics, pottery, logos and jewelry. The symbols have a decorative function but also represent objects that encapsulate evocative messages that convey traditional wisdom, aspects of life or the environment."

  • A brass Adinkra Symbol pendant that is 30 x 39  mm including 2 rings. This pendant was found at the Kokofrom Cooperative in Kumasi. Wikipedia says this about Adinkra Symbols: 'Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Ashanti, that represent concepts or aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics, pottery, logos and advertising. They are incorporated into walls and other architectural features. Fabric adinkra are often made by woodcut sign writing as well as screen printing. Adinkra symbols appear on some traditional Akan goldweights. The symbols are also carved on stools for domestic and ritual use. Tourism has led to new departures in the use of the symbols in such items as T-shirts and jewelry. The symbols have a decorative function but also represent objects that encapsulate evocative messages that convey traditional wisdom, aspects of life or the environment. There are many different symbols with distinct meanings, often linked with proverbs. ' This particular Adinkra Symbol, Sankofa which means "Go Back and Get It" is a  symbol of the importance of learning from the past.
