2 strings of tiny Bauxite Beads strung on raffia 14" long. There are approx. 124 beads which are 3x2 mm. The beads are polished and have an earthy look. These beads were bought directly from the Beadmakers in Akyem Abompe in Ghana where they are handcrafted in a very labour intensive process starting from mining the bauxite from the nearby hills to drilling the holes. These bauxite beads have become scarce as the young people leave the villages.

A strand of tiny Bauxite Beads strung on raffia 24" long. The beads are approx. 4 mm. The beads are rough and have an earthy hewn look. These beads were bought from Hidir, a Trader at the Koforidua Market. He was telling me these beads which are handcrafted in a very labour intensive process starting from mining the bauxite to drilling the holes, are now endangered as less and less are being made as the Craftsmen cannot make a reasonable living. Bauxite Beads are a beautiful mix of Autumn browns ranging from quite a light almost orange brown to a deep rich brown. They give a necklace a natural look and feel.

A strand of approx. small Bauxite Beads strung on raffia 24" long. The beads are approx. 7 mm. They are handmade and so will vary in size, shape and colour. The beads are polished and have an earthy rough hewn look. These beads were bought directly Hidir, a Trader in Koforidua, Ghana. He was telling me these beads are becoming harder and harder to get as they are handcrafted in a very labour intensive process starting from mining the bauxite from the nearby hills to drilling the holes and as the older generation retires no one takes their place as the Craftsman cannot make a reasonable living. Bauxite Beads are a beautiful mix of Autumn browns ranging from quite a light almost orange brown to a deep rich brown. These beads tend towards the lighter earthy colours. They give a necklace a natural look and feel.

A strand of six natural clay coloured with white designs round beads 20 mm in diameter. You will receive a strand as shown in the photo. Please note that these beads were handmade so each bead varies. My affection for these beads grew when I heard that these 'Spindles' actually evolved into the beads they are today because of our avid collectioner's heart (all Beaders have one of those!) Originally these Spindles were actually made to spin cotton but then people started collecting them because they were so beautiful. They became rare .. so some enterprising people started making new ones but more as the beads they are today... They are so beautiful and evoke the country, Africa just by handling them and by the fact they are made of Africa's earth.

The modern nicknames given to these beads derive from the fact they bear a close resemblance in shape to the eggs of small wild birds. Colodonte Beads manufactured during the 19th Century typically suffer minor pitting – a tell-tale sign of their age and fascinating history.' (wikipedia)

A Bracelet Sized strand of 19 Purple with Yellow Flowers Handpainted Recycled Glass Beads on string. Each bead is about 10 mm x 6 mm. The beads are Purple with bright starburst yellow flowers with red at their centers. These beads are handmade and handpainted so they will vary in size, shape and pattern. Purple is a very complex colour. There are so many variations. It is said purple symbolizes magic, mystery, spirituality, the sub-conscious, creativity, dignity, royalty – and it does evoke all of these meanings more so than any other color. Further variations of purple can convey different meanings. For instance light purples are light-hearted, floral, and romantic. The dark shades are more intellectual and dignified.
