These unique thin disc (heishi) beads which are made with vulcanite, a vulcanized hard rubber and traces of vinyl (some of the older vinyl beads are made from recycled vinyl records) are a very popular item at Funky Frog and several clients had asked me to look for them. The markets have been flooded by the new Vinyl Beads in all sorts of bright vivid colours and sizes and going very cheap. The downside of the new vinyl beads are they are rougher and not as smooth and silky as the older vintage vinyl beads. It is these older Vintage Vinyl Beads that are sought after and are becoming harder and more expensive to find. Also the downside to the vintage vinyl beads is some of them are friable and break very easily especially the black.Funky Frog brought back a mix of the two. You will see all the Vintage Vinyl Beads will be labeled Vintage. These beads are becoming quite valuable.The new Vinyl Beads are fun, vibrant and plentiful. Funky Frog has both. The vinyl beads are mainly red mixed with other colours. There are 7 strands to choose from. Vinyl Beads make great spacer beads or as the feature bead for your jewelry. My Trader had to search for this size vinyl bead. He really came through with these as they are really beautifully made and a rich colour.

In the Workshop there are shelves of single beads in jars - looks like a Candy Shop! This pair of Bodoms are about 28mm. They are a beautiful a greenish yellow with two different brown and teal designs. All of these Bodoms are beautiful and were found in Ghana's Beads Markets. These black Vintage Vinyl Beads are strung on string and a strand is 29" long.The 'heishi' beads are about 3 mm. You will receive a strand that is similar to the ones in the photos. These Vinyl Beads make great spacer beads. Folklore has it that these beads were made from old records but apparently they are actually made from an early rubber product called Vulcanite. Vulcanite is a hard, moldable rubber that has been formed by “vulcanizing” natural rubber through a curing process that involves high heat and the addition of sulfur. The result is a hard substance sometimes called “ebonite” that was used in the Victorian period to make mourning jewelry, combs, ornaments and buttons.
