  • A strand of small Bauxite Beads which are 4mm are strung on raffia 22" long.  The beads are polished and have an earthy look. These beads were bought directly from the Beadmakers in Akyem Abompe in Ghana where they are handcrafted in a very labour intensive process starting from mining the bauxite from the nearby hills to drilling the holes. Bauxite Beads are a beautiful mix of Autumn browns ranging from quite a light almost orange brown to a deep rich brown. They give a necklace a natural earth look and feel. Since these are handmade there are variations amongst the beads so you will get a strand similar to the one in the photo.

He was telling me these beads are becoming harder and harder to get as  they are handcrafted in a very labour intensive process starting from mining the bauxite from the nearby hills to drilling the holes and as the older generation retires no one takes their place as the Craftsman cannot make a reasonable living. Bauxite Beads are a beautiful mix of Autumn browns ranging from quite a light almost orange brown to a deep rich brown. These beads tend towards the lighter earthy colours. They give a necklace a natural look and feel.

Bauxite Beads are a beautiful mix of Autumn browns ranging from quite a light almost orange brown to a deep rich brown. They give a necklace a natural look and feel.

  • During a Bead Hunt Funky Frog made a big order from the Kokofrom Cooperative outside Kumasi. These round brass beads were made especially for Funky Frog . The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors... back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! If you would like to see the intricate process check out the blog here ... These brass beads  are about 9 mm and the hole is about 2-3mm. This is a mixture of two designs, one is  cross hatches and the third is solid with a line design. You will get a mix like in the photo. $6.50/12 beads
  • During 2016 Bead Hunt Funky Frog made a big order from the Kokofrom Cooperative outside Kumasi. The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors... back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! If you would like to see the intricate process check out the blog here ... These Brass Elbow Beads were made especially for Funky Frog. They are quite an unusual shape ... i saw one among all the beads and asked to have some made as a trial. Looking forward to incorporating them into my jewelry!!  They are about 29" x 21" .
