The Adinkra symbol Sankofa is a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards. Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana. The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” The Akan believe the past serves as a guide for planning the future. To the Akan, it is this wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future. These are a variety of the Sankofa as pendants found in the Bead Markets of Ghana, W.Africa during Funky Frog's many Bead Hunts over the years. -
Beautiful Lost Wax Brass Elephant Pendants.... handmade for Funky Frog by the Kokofrom guys in Kumasi. When you think of Africa you think of Elephants! "Elephants are highly intelligent animals with complex emotions, feelings, compassion and self-awareness (elephants are one of very few species to recognize themselves in a mirror!). The gestation period of an elephant is 22 months. That's almost 2 years, the longest pregnancy of any mammal! And they are the largest land animal on earth!" A very delicate large dark Wooden Pendant with a smaller Pendant inside handmade in Togo, West Africa. I found these pendants in the amazing Suntrade Bead Store in Accra, W. Africa. The hole is at the thick end going side to side all the way through the two pendants. The large pendant is about 5 x 1 3/4" with the smaller inset pendant being about 3 1/2 x 1". $18/2 pendants -
