A strand of about 39 pink Sandcast Recycled Glass Beads strung on string 23" long. The beads are around 15x10 mm. These recycled glass beads were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa by crushing old, discarded glass, adding colorant and then pouring the coloured powder into molds. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a woodburning earthen oven. Ghana is famous for this type of bead. These beads were designed and made by a Contemporary Bead Designer, TET located near Accra. -

For generations a spectacular range of brass beads and pendants have been produced across Africa including small anvil-shaped nugget charms known as “Igbo bugs” popular among the Fulani. The tradition of metalworking in Africa is very much alive. Yes. Myrrh. As in Frankinscense and Myrrh. 6 strands of Myrrh Beads 32" long found in the largest beads market in Western Africa, Koforidua Beads Market. The beads are made from the sap of the Commiphora tree. "Both frankincense and myrrh are resins – hardened sap from trees. In both cases, trees are slashed and allowed to “bleed.” The sap that comes from the trees hardens and forms beads or “tears.” While frankincense is used for incense and myrrh is mainly used in oral preparations, they both have many more uses. Myrrh was highly esteemed by the ancients; in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions, it was an ingredient of costly incenses, perfumes, and cosmetics and was used in medicines for local applications and in embalming." -
A gorgeous Traditional Bingba Smock .... Bingba is the name of the fabric. It is similar to Kente Cloth. Kente Fabric is what is made in southern Ghana and and this fabric is the equivalent of Kente for the Northerners in Ghana. The Smock is a large size. Either to be worn or the Smock would look fabulous as a Wall Hanging!!! The soft colours of Turquoise, Orange and off White would look so amazing on a large wall ... the fabric is hand woven and the garment is completely handmade with a lot of hand stitching. Funky Frog is selling this traditional Smock for a favourite Trader, Ibrahim. All money will go directly to him. He asks $200 US for this magnificent piece of art. "The African Fugu Batakari jacket or smock is perhaps the most distinctive traditional garment from West Africa. Although this type of smock is most popular in Northern Ghana, it has gained acceptance and significance throughout the nation. The Fugu was introduced in Ghana by the Moshies from Burkino Faso and by the Hausas from northern Nigeria, both of whom migrated into Northern Ghana. The name Fugu comes from the Moshie word for cloth. The Dagombas call the garment Bingba, and in the south they call it Batakari. These smocks represent a powerful heritage." -

The violence exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis, with 8.8 million people requiring assistance and over 575,000 forced from their homes, including 375,000 internally displaced people and 205,000 refugees in neighboring countries as of August 2023. This forces many of the traditional artisans to leave the villages in pursuit of new opportunities. It makes these beads quite precious. -
