A strand of 45 rich red and white Fused Recycled Glass beads on string 21" long. These recycled beads were bought directly from the small factory, TK Beads in Accra, Ghana where the artisans hand make the beads in the labor intensive method of their ancestors from crushing glass to baking the final product in wood ovens. These beads are made by recycling previously used beads. The beads are melted together in a clay oven to make this beautiful mosaic of colors. Each bead is approx. 11 mm. A gorgeous combination of various African Amber beads for your own necklace design! Baltic Amber, a fossilized tree resin, has been prized and coveted for its colour and natural beauty since ancient times. Because this amber is relatively rare and therefore expensive, there have been many attempts to replace it with other natural and synthetic resins. Research by Angela Fisher (author of Africa Adorned) and others suggests that very little African "amber" is 'true' amber. Most is probably made in Europe and carved in Africa. Some may be Copal resin (young tree resin) that is formed into beads, some may be a blend of natural and manmade resins, and some may be made from phenolic plastic. Horn that is a byproduct has also been called African amber. Even hard wood has been use and then called 'African Amber'. A strand of 72 (8 mm) Bodom Recycled Glass Beads on string 23" long. This strand is a charcoal that has an earthy organic feel. The beads are not shiny as the photo depicts (should redo note to self) and charcoal is a good description - smokey and dark. Ghana is famous for these recycled beads made from recycled glass bottles. These recycled beads were bought directly from the small factory in Accra, Ghana where the artisans hand make the beads in the labor intensive method of their ancestors from crushing glass to baking the final product in wood ovens. The Bead Designer of these beads creates beautiful, very contemporary recycled glass beads. -
