These recycled beads were bought directly from the small factory, TK Beads in Accra, Ghana where the artisans hand make the beads in the labor intensive method of their ancestors from crushing glass to baking the final product in wood ovens. These beads are made by recycling previously used beads. The beads are melted together in a clay oven to make this beautiful mosaic of colors. Each bead is approx. 11 mm. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a wood burning earthen oven. Ghana is famous for this type of bead. Her secret she says is that the 'old' material of the ancients is used to make the beads. Whatever she does her beads are really gorgeous and invoke the 'Old Trade Beads' for sure. I hated to break up this strand but will if you are interested in having only a few of these gorgeous beads.
