A colourful strand of 100 Mali Wedding Beads strung on fishing wire 27" long. Like many African Trade Beads, these multicolored, tear shaped, glass beads were originally made in what was then known as Czechoslovakia and later traded to Africa. In Mali it is a tradition to present these beads to the bride on her wedding day. You will receive a strand similar to the one in the photo. -

These Sandcast Beads beads were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa by crushing old, discarded glass, adding colorant and then pouring the powder into clay molds. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a woodburning earthen oven. Ghana is famous for this type of bead. -

They make a real statement as a necklace strung togehter.. The trader in the Koforidua Market who sold these to me said they were "African Amber". A lot of beads are put under the name 'African Amber' but by any name they are gorgeous and add a certain something .... These beads are $3 each -

Also the downside to the vintage vinyl beads is some of them are friable and break very easily especially the black. Funky Frog brought back a mix of the two. Because this amber is relatively rare and therefore expensive, there have been many attempts to replace it with other natural and synthetic resins. Research by Angela Fisher (author of Africa Adorned) and others suggests that very little African "amber" is 'true' amber. Most is probably made in Europe and carved in Africa. Some may be Copal resin (young tree resin) that is formed into beads, some may be a blend of natural and manmade resins, and some may be made from phenolic plastic. Horn that is a meat byproduct has also been called African amber. Funky Frog loves all the various kinds of 'African Amber' beads for their own intrinsic beauty and worth. A strand of 74 size 1 (6 mm) Bodom Recycled Glass Beads on string 19" long. This strand is a nutty brown that has an earthy organic feel. Ghana is famous for these recycled beads made from recycled glass bottles. These recycled beads were bought directly from the small factory in Accra, Ghana where the artisans hand make the beads in the labor intensive method of their ancestors from crushing glass to baking the final product in wood ovens. The Bead Designer of these beads creates beautiful, very contemporary recycled glass beads. -
