Hunting for Vinyl Beads during the 2018 Beads Hunt proved to be a challenge. These unique thin disc (heishi) beads which are made with vulcanite, a vulcanized hard rubber and traces of vinyl (some of the older vinyl beads are made from recycled vinyl records) are a very popular item at Funky Frog and several clients had asked me to look for them. The markets have been flooded by the new Vinyl Beads in all sorts of bright vivid colours and sizes. The downside of the new vinyl beads are they are rougher and not as smooth and silky as the older vintage vinyl beads. It is these older Vintage Vinyl Beads that are sought after and are becoming harder and more expensive to find. Also the downside to the vintage vinyl beads is some of them are friable and break very easily especially the black. Funky Frog brought back a mix of the two. You will see all the Vintage Vinyl Beads will be labeled Vintage. These beads are becoming quite valuable. The new Vinyl Beads are fun, vibrant and plentiful. Funky Frog has both. Vinyl Beads make great Spacer Beads or as the feature beads for your jewelry. These particular Vinyl Beads are Vintage.

Millefiori Trade Beads from Venice have always been coveted , both in West Africa, where they were shipped to starting as early as the late 19th century, and in Europe and North America. Many of you will know these beads as ‘love beads’ from the 60’s! Millefiori or ‘thousand flowers’ Beads are made by places slices of cane bead on a core of molten glass. Over the years these beads’ value have soared so it is no wonder other places started to make copies of these beads. India has been making beads for centuries and started making beads that look like the Venetian Trade Beads from about 1980. These beads are generally larger than the original Venetian beads with larger holes . These Indian Venetian Beads found their way to Ghana’s Bead Markets where Funky Frog found them and was captivated by their colourful and varied shapes. This strand of 20 colourful millifiori beads are about 11x18 mm. They are handmade so will vary in size, shape and colour.
  • African Amber Beads Combo African Amber Beads Combo
A gorgeous combination of various African Amber beads for your own necklace design! Baltic Amber, a fossilized tree resin, has been prized and coveted for its colour and natural beauty since ancient times. Because this amber is relatively rare and therefore expensive, there have been many attempts to replace it with other natural and synthetic resins. Research by Angela Fisher (author of Africa Adorned) and others suggests that very little African "amber" is 'true' amber. Most is probably made in Europe and carved in Africa. Some may be Copal resin (young tree resin) that is formed into beads, some may be a blend of natural and manmade resins, and some may be made from phenolic plastic. Horn that is a byproduct has also been called African amber. Even hard wood has been use and then called 'African Amber'. Funky Frog loves all the various kinds of 'African Amber' beads for their own intrinsic beauty and worth. 5 Combos to choose from!
