A Bracelet Sized strand of 19 Purple with Yellow Flowers Handpainted Recycled Glass Beads on string. Each bead is about 10 mm x 6 mm. The beads are Purple with bright starburst yellow flowers with red at their centers. These beads are handmade and handpainted so they will vary in size, shape and pattern. Purple is a very complex colour. There are so many variations. It is said purple symbolizes magic, mystery, spirituality, the sub-conscious, creativity, dignity, royalty – and it does evoke all of these meanings more so than any other color. Further variations of purple can convey different meanings. For instance light purples are light-hearted, floral, and romantic. The dark shades are more intellectual and dignified. You either love purple or you don’t. It was the one colour most people asked for before the 2020 Bead Hunt!!

The beads are all handcrafted so will vary in colour, size and shape. The strand you will received will be similar to the photo but may have variations. These recycled glass beads were handcrafted in Ghana, Africa by crushing old, discarded glass, adding colorant and then pouring the powder into clay molds. The stem of a local plant is added, this burns away during firing, leaving a hole for stringing. The beads are fired in a wood burning earthen oven. If you would like to read more about this and see photos please check out the blog: Recycled Glass Beads ... Ghana is famous for this type of bead.

In Africa, these Bodom beads are held in the highest esteem and usually only worn for celebrations, funerals, and are often buried with the dead. There is much folklore about their magical powers as well. These large bodom beads have the evil eye. The belief in the ‘evil eye’ dates back thousands of years. It is one of the strongest symbolic symbols in the world. Wearing an evil eye as an amulet is believed to protect the wearer from evil forces. The evil eye has symbolism in practically every country in the world and every religion. Very powerful stuff! These impressive beads are still being made today in the same painstaking and labour intensive way as the ancestors. To see these beads being made please check out the blog, the Bodom. This Bodom Bead is a squashed bicone and is about 26mmH x 44mmW . This large bead is white with a rust red, blue and black 'evil eye' designs. The hole is about 5 mm. The bead has a rough, earthy, organic feel to it. We are displaying only two of these beads but there are more but they will have slight variations so if you would like more than one please contact us and we will send you a photo ....

Out of stockThere is a small village, Kokofrom just outside Kumasi, Ghana where there are artisans who make lost wax brass beads in the same way as their ancestors. I asked them to make some closures for me. The whole look which is a bit rough and earthy goes perfectly with the African Beads. The artisans use whatever scrap metal they can get their hands on form old taps to pipes to .. but they call it 'brass'. There are two sizes of these closures; small and large. This is the large closure. The hook is 23mm and the eye is 14mm.
